8. Alone

After several attempts to engage Gabi in conversation only to receive curt answers, I realised she was not in the mood to talk and decided to give her some space. This way, we walked together in silence for about an hour until we reached a ravine. As we stood overlooking the gorge, I pulled out the map but couldn’t locate our position on it. I turned to Gabi for help. “Gabi, can you find this ravine on the map?”

She took the map from my hands. “Jordi said to look at the contours. If there are contour lines that form a V-shape, that’s a ravine.”

“I see only loops.”

“No, closed loops represent hills.”

I nodded towards the ravine in front of us. “This is not a hill, definitely.”

Gabi agreed, “No, it isn’t. But the trail line on the map doesn’t indicate that we are supposed to cross a ravine.”

“Why do you think that is?”

“I don’t know. Perhaps the ravine is too small to show on a map.”

“What should we do, then? Cross it?”

Gabi scanned the ravine from end to end, then said, “No. We’ll climb down and follow it.”

“Alright,” I agreed. “But which way—left or right?”

After examining the gorge for a few moments and consulting the map again, she concluded, “Right.” She put her finger on the same cross-hatched area, shaded in blue, that Jordi had drawn our attention to before parting our ways. “Look! The blue line indicates that the trail runs to the right of this area. Jordi mentioned that this area is marshlands, and we should steer clear from it.”

“Ah, yeah, that makes sense! Jordi taught you well, despite you two being so distracted by each other’s company.”

Gabi handed me back the map, visibly unimpressed by my veiled reference to the nature of Jordi’s and her interactions.

Undeterred, I chuckled. “To be fair, I thought he was just flirting with you, but it seems he genuinely—”

“Can we not talk about him, Teddy?” Gabi cut me off, her voice rising.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wind you up.”

“But that’s exactly what you’re doing!”

“OK, I apologise. Let’s continue.”

I folded the map and tucked it into my pocket. As we descended into the ravine and turned right, we walked for about twenty minutes before emerging from it. I contemplated taking out the map again to check our bearings but decided against it when I spotted a path and chose to follow it.

Gabi walked behind me, seemingly lost in her thoughts, a mirror to my own ruminations, as I couldn’t shake off the thoughts of what had transpired between her and Jordi, and particularly, her feelings towards him. My own emotions were a bewildering mix of curiosity, excitement, and jealousy.

Thus, another hour passed in near silence, save for the sound of our steps and the occasional rustle of the underbrush. We navigated the terrain, each ensnared by our own silent reflections.

Gabi had made it clear she was reluctant to discuss Jordi, yet the nagging question of her feelings for him gnawed at me incessantly. Eventually,
